Medici Chapels: which ticket and what will you see?

Updated October 11, 2026 · 4 min read

The patterned marble interior beneath the octagonal dome of the Medici Chapels

Choose reserved entry if you want a predictable slot; choose a guided Medici walk only if you want the family story beyond this museum. The chapels form part of the San Lorenzo complex, but admission arrangements for neighbouring spaces are not automatically identical. Read the inclusion list instead of assuming “San Lorenzo” covers everything.

What you see inside

The museum’s two headline spaces are very different. Michelangelo designed the New Sacristy and its sculptural programme around Medici tombs. The Chapel of the Princes is the monumental dynastic statement: an octagonal, dome-covered room rich in coloured stone and marble. The contrast between intimate sculpture and grand decoration is the reason to visit.

The reserved entrance ticket to the Medici Chapels starts at €17.75 in the current selection and has the most reviews among the relevant entry products. According to the booking page, the chosen slot is binding: if you miss it, you are refused entry. You exchange the voucher for the ticket on the booked day; if there is a queue, show the voucher to the staff, as prepaid tickets get priority entrance. The audio app is included, and a physical museum audio guide costs €7.50 extra according to the page. Confirm exact inclusions, accessibility and cancellation terms on the booking page.

Ticket or wider tour?

A ticket is enough when Michelangelo’s work and the interiors are your focus. A guided Medici walk is useful when you want to connect San Lorenzo with the family’s palaces, politics and other sites, but check whether it actually enters the chapels. A tour mentioning the Medici name may remain outdoors.

Our recommendation

For most visitors, reserve entry and allow time to look slowly rather than adding another major museum immediately afterwards. The chapels work particularly well as a focused alternative to the much larger Uffizi.

Compare other things to do in Florence. Check current opening times and temporary room closures before leaving; museum operations can change after booking.
