Climbing Brunelleschi’s Dome: which ticket, how hard and what time?
Updated October 11, 2026 · 5 min read
You need the Brunelleschi Pass for the dome. It also covers the Baptistery, Giotto’s Bell Tower, Opera del Duomo Museum and Santa Reparata. The pass remains valid for three days from the booked date, but the dome slot is fixed and cannot be treated like the other flexible entries.
What changes the choice
The climb has 463 steps and no lift. The listing gives one hour for the whole visit and names people with mobility impairments, claustrophobia or respiratory problems, wheelchair users and people over 70 as not suitable. A security check comes before entry and can take 15 to 30 minutes, according to the provider. This is not an accessibility promise: narrow passages, stairs and close quarters are the experience.
Choose the earliest practical slot if you prefer cooler conditions and want the rest of the day free. A later visit can produce softer light, but leaves less recovery room if your plans run late. The provider stresses that the dome slot must be respected strictly. Luggage, large bags and backpacks are not allowed, and you need to bring your passport or ID card.
The bookable option
The Brunelleschi’s Dome Climb Entry Ticket and Duomo is the most-reviewed dome product in the Florence selection. Verify the exact pass inclusions, meeting process and cancellation terms on the booking page; third-party products do not all work identically.
Our recommendation
For most fit visitors, the climb is demanding but manageable when taken slowly. If enclosed stairs or 463 steps sound wrong, skip the summit without regret and use the Florence Duomo ticket comparison for cathedral-complex alternatives.
What to do before your slot
Leave bags and luggage at your hotel. According to the provider, the meeting point is in front of the Lindt chocolate shop on the left side of the cathedral, near the dome entrance; the guide holds a white flag. Keep voucher and ID together and download the provider’s POP GUIDE app beforehand. Shoulders and knees must be covered. Also check the closing times of the other sites: the Opera del Duomo Museum is closed on the first Tuesday of the month, the Baptistery closes at 2 pm on the first Sunday, and the cathedral and crypt are closed on Sundays. Eat and drink beforehand without arriving overfull, and do not rely on catching up after a late arrival. Once on the staircase, let faster visitors pass where staff and space allow rather than matching somebody else’s pace.
